EU Citizenship

The concept of being a citizen of the European Union actually does not officially exist — rather, this refers to a person who has a passport from a country who is a member of the European Union. Therefore, a citizen of Germany, Bulgaria, Austria or any of the 28 countries of the EU may well consider themselves also a citizen of the EU.

Having a passport from one of the EU countries, which was formed in 1992 after the signing of the Maastricht Treaty, provides many advantages to its holder. Throughout the entire territory of the EU, uniform laws are in force, citizens have equal rights, have the same opportunity to freely move and be employed in the territory of any EU member state. EU rules allow you to receive education and medical care, travel and conduct business without customs and visa restrictions.

For persons from third countries outside the EU, there are several schemes for obtaining citizenship or residence permit in the European Union.

Ways to obtain a residence permit (permit):

  • to be married to an EU citizen;
  • student status of any university in the European Union;
  • work permit;
  • family reunion;
  • purchase of real estate in the territory of the European Union;
  • setting up your own business or opening an office of a foreign company;
  • participation in state investment programs.

In addition, a residence permit can be granted when undergoing a long course of treatment or rehabilitation in EU clinics.

Ways of obtaining citizenship:

  • naturalization (provided for persons living in the country on the basis of a residence permit from 7 to 12 years — each member state has its own regulations);
  • repatriation (applies to displaced persons, prisoners of war, refugees and immigrants with automatic restoration of their rights or to insured persons upon the occurrence of an insured event to return to the country of residence);
  • obtaining a nationality for investment.

The advantages of citizenship of a country — a member of the European Union:

  • the possibility of legal residence in economically stable states;
  • access to social benefits in the EU;
  • the opportunity to work or do business in countries with low levels of corruption and a well-organized judicial system;
  • the opportunity to undergo treatment in the best medical institutions in Europe;
  • access to quality higher education;
  • the possibility of free passage of customs and unimpeded movement within the Schengen countries and the EU, as well as on the territory of another 158 countries for which a visa-free regime is in effect for EU citizens;
  • the ability to use effective financial instruments and banking offers, ranging from concessional lending to mortgage processing on favourable terms.
